The axe fell at Global Calgary Thursday morning with 45 local jobs being eliminated.

Staff were informed of the layoffs through a tele-conferece. The jobs are being centralized in Toronto.

No on-air staff are affected, but all master control room jobs will be done out of Toronto starting February 2022.

Engineer positions and quality control people also are also affected.

“Our On-Air Services, Quality Control and On Air Engineering operations in Calgary will be transferring to Toronto, Ontario. The Company estimates the changes will be complete no later than March 31, 2022. The approximate number of employees affected as a result of the change is 45,” said an internal union memo obtained by the Western Standard.

“The new roles in Toronto fall outside of both the Alberta Bargaining and the Eastern Bargaining units of Local M1 Unifor, and in fact they are non-union positions.’

“Please make sure you are aware of the company’s Social Media policy during this time.”

Global was one of the mainstream media outlets in Canada that benefits from more than $500 million in government bailout money.
