All Alberta MLAs and legislature staff must be vaccinated by October 25 or present a negative COVID-19 test every 72 hours, said UCP House Leader Jason Nixon.
Nixon said in the UCP caucus, 56 MLAs are fully vaccinated, three MLAs have had one shot, but will get the second before October 25, and one unvaccinated MLA is talking with his doctor about medical issues involving the vaccination.
“At this stage, with the exception of the one individual who’s working through medical circumstance, I anticipate our entire caucus will be vaccinated by the time the chamber returns,” Nixon said.
All of the NDP MLAs have had their vaccinations. The two independent MLAs, Drew Barnes and Todd Loewen, have refused to disclose their vaccination status.
Opposition deputy house leader Thomas Dang issued a statement saying it’s “disgraceful” there are still some UCP MLAs not fully vaccinated as Alberta battles the fourth wave of COVID-19.
“All MLAs and political staff must be part of sending a clear message that vaccines are safe, effective, and essential to protecting Albertans,” Dang said in the statement.
