The Sûreté du Québec established a traffic checkpoint Wednesday on southbound Highway 15 near the Lacolle border crossing after becoming aware of suggestions online that the crossing might be blocked by protesters.

“We received information that there could be a convoy of vehicles headed toward the customs offices at Lacolle to block traffic,” said SQ spokesperson Sgt. Stéphane Tremblay. “We’re deployed to ensure the traffic flow remains fluid.”

Several SQ squad cars were deployed at the border in the Montérégie Wednesday morning, narrowing the highway to one lane and also controlling access to Exit 6.

The deployment comes after border crossings in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia were occupied for varying lengths of time by convoys of demonstrators opposed to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
