Germany announced on Thursday that it would be implementing a nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated individuals, according to Reuters.

Those who are not adequately vaccinated for COVID-19 will be unable to access all services but those that are deemed essential, such as grocery or pharmacy services.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Chancellor Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz following meetings with national leaders.

Germany is among several countries, including neighbouring Austria, that is considering mandatory vaccinations for its citizens.

Just under 69 percent of Germany’s population is adequately vaccinated. Germany has fewer vaccinated citizens than the UK, Canada, and other Western countries. Roughly 16 million Germans are yet to be vaccinated.
