Republican candidate for California governor Larry Elder was forced to cut short a campaign event Wednesday after protesters allegedly shot at his security detail with a pellet gun.

“Today I kicked off the Recall Express bus tour,” Elder posted to Twitter. “Before we even left Los Angeles, my security detail was physically assaulted, shot with a pellet gun, and hit with projectiles. The intolerant left will not stop us. We will recall Gavin Newsom. We will save California.”

Elder’s statement came after video showed a protestor in a gorilla mask throwing eggs at the candidate and shouting slurs as he toured homeless encampments in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Elder was taken to a waiting vehicle and driven away by his security team to another campaign location in Venice. LAPD confirmed to ABC 7 that it is investigating a report “that a driver and security team member for Elder were struck but not seriously injured around 10:45 a.m. on Melrose Avenue.”

Elder, the leading candidate to replace Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom, would be the first black governor of California if the recall effort is successful. Elder has been on the receiving end of bias attacks in media, including having the LA Times, as well as supporters of Newsom, call him the “black face of white supremacy.”

On Monday, a California professor speaking at a rally for Newsom reportedly echoed the verbiage and called Elder “a black face on white supremacy” during a campaign event.
