On Wednesday, Glenn Danzig joined his iconic voice to the growing chorus of artists and creative people lashing out at cancel culture, or what he calls “woke bulls**t”.
The ex-frontman of the Misfits had a full-length interview with
Rolling Stone, and spoke out against cancel culture in the same way as
other stars like Morrisey and Slayer’s Tom Ayala have recently, saying that a lot of great art “would never have happened” if things back then were like they were today.
They were addressing the inspiration behind many of the hit songs Danzig had penned, and then veered over to the subject of his controversial hit “Last Caress”, which hit the charts, then was covered by Metallica and hit the charts again. “Last Caress” is famous for it’s less-than-polite lyrics.
“What’s the story behind ‘Last Caress’? That obviously wasn’t about a movie.”
It’s just a crazy-ass song. We would do things just to piss people off.”
“So was that song just, ‘Let me think of the most f**ked up things I can think of’?”
“Part of it, yeah. Like, ‘F**k everybody. F**k you, f**k you, f**k you, f**k the world.’ And that was pretty much the attitude. It was just like, ‘F**k your system, f**k all this bulls**t.'”
“It was something else. I don’t think people will ever see anything like it again. There won’t be any new bands coming out like that. Now, they will immediately get canceled.”
“People don’t understand, because everything’s so cancel-culture, woke bulls**t nowadays, but you could never have the punk explosion nowadays, because of cancel culture and woke bulls**t. You could never have it. It would never have happened. We’re lucky it happened when it did, because it’ll never happen again. You won’t have any of those kinds of bands ever again. Everyone’s so uptight and P.C., it’s just like, ‘OK, whatever.'”
Danzing also had something to say during the interview about his views on COVID and the current lockdown:
“You go to the supermarket and [can] be around a million people, but you can’t go to a theater? You can sit on an airplane right next to a motherfucker, but you can’t go to a theater socially distanced? How does that make sense?”
Danzig is currently promoting his new film “Death Rider in the House of Vampires”, which is slated for release in June of 2021. He dubs the film a “vampire spaghetti Western.”
